| Momenta’s non-invasive drug
delivery program explores the role that sugars can play in facilitating
the transport of drugs, such as therapeutic proteins, across mucosal
membranes which are present in the body in areas such as the lungs and
gastrointestinal tract. Most therapeutic proteins, as well as other
large macromolecules, can only be introduced into the body through injection.
Through our sequencing capabilities, we have discovered that sugars
can efficiently transport these drugs across membranes and facilitate
their non-invasive delivery. We believe our technology will enable improvements
in the non-invasive delivery of a broad range of therapeutic proteins,
leading to increased bioavailability, improved safety, and the ability
to deliver larger drugs. Our current focus is on the pulmonary delivery
of therapeutic proteins, where bioavailability has been a challenge,
with a specific focus on interferon beta, erythropoietin, insulin and
human growth hormone. We believe our pulmonary delivery has significant
advantages over current technologies including the fact that it targets
larger drug particles to the upper lung, works with natural sugar formulations
and results in greater levels of bioavailability than levels reported
by others.
