Momenta's strategy is to derive both near- and long-term value from our technology platform by combining a broad novel discovery platform with significant near-term product opportunities.
Near-term product opportunities such as our complex generic programs have the potential to provide meaningful funding sources for research and development, as well as generate significant value to shareholders. Over the long-term, we are also building value by using our analytics to reveal the roles that complex biomolecules, such as sugars, play in basic biology and the pathways of disease.
Momenta is applying its technology and its understanding of complex sugars to product development in three principal ways:
Duplicate
Develop technology-enabled generic and follow-on versions of complex drugs through precise and thorough characterization
To date, creating generic versions of selected drugs has been scientifically challenging due to the difficulty in duplicating the complex chemical structures they contain. However, our technology helps us determine the precise chemical composition of these drugs and our rich characterization data makes it possible for us to develop what we believe are equivalent generic versions. While we focused our complex generics program initially on sugar-based products, we have expanded our scope to include other complex mixture products.
Re-Engineer
Improve therapeutic products
We are creating proprietary drugs containing sugars that represent improvements over currently marketed complex drugs. Through the application of our technology, we can determine the structure-activity relationships of the chemical sugar structures contained in these drugs by identifying and isolating the particular chemical structures that are contained in these drugs and linking these structures to specific biological activities. We then rationally engineer the chemical composition in order to design what we believe will be an improved therapeutic.
Create
Discover and develop novel drugs
We are applying our understanding of the role sugars play in basic biology and disease to pursue the development of novel sugar-based drugs and to identify new targets for small-molecule drugs.
Our lead drug discovery program is in oncology and is based on research showing that sugars can both decrease the growth rate of cancer cells and increase their rate of death.
