| Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biotechnology company specializing in the detailed structural analysis and design of complex sugars (polysaccharides) for the development of improved versions of existing drugs, the development of novel drugs, and the discovery of new biological processes. We are also utilizing our ability to sequence, or analyze the molecular structure of, sugars to create technology-enabled generic versions of complex sugar-based products. Our most advanced product candidate, M-Enoxaparin, is designed to be a technology-enabled generic version of Lovenox®, a widely prescribed low molecular weight heparin, or LMWH. Our novel product candidates include M118, a LMWH for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes that has been designed to possess specific biological attributes as well as a technology that has been designed to use specific sugar sequences to improve the non-invasive delivery of drugs such as therapeutic proteins. Through detailed analysis of the molecular structure of complex sugars, our technology provides a more complete understanding of the roles that sugars play in cellular function, disease, and drug action. While it has been recognized that sugars play fundamental roles in the regulation of biological activity, the technical and analytic challenges associated with sequencing complex sugars have hindered a comprehensive understanding of their role in disease biology as well as in drug action. We believe understanding the structure, specific function, and manner in which complex sugars affect critical biological processes and existing therapeutics will provide significant opportunities for drug discovery and development. Momenta was founded in 2001 based on technology developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Applying Technology to Products Momenta is applying its technology and its understanding of complex sugars to product development in three primary ways:
Momenta seeks to capitalize on near-term revenue
opportunities which can be used to foster long-term growth and to partially
fund our discovery and development programs. We simultaneously plan
to advance improved versions of existing products as well as novel discovery
candidates, based on our understanding of sugars’ role in disease
biology and drug action, through clinical development to commercialization.
