Biosimilars and Potentially Interchangeable Biologics: Development ProgramMomenta is using its technology to create biosimilars and potentially interchangeable biologics – a completely new segment of the biologics market. Current biosimilars are being developed and commercialized with an understanding that some aspects of the drug are different from that of its brand name counterpart. These differences may lead to uncertainty as to how well the biosimilar can replicate the therapeutic effects of its branded counterpart and provide the same safety profile. We are striving to remove that uncertainty and any qualitative product differences by unlocking the structure of therapeutic proteins and creating thoroughly characterized products that are indistinguishable from the brand name drug.
In December of 2011, Momenta signed a major biosimilars collaboration with Baxter for the worldwide development and commercialization of up to six biosimilars and potentially interchangeable biologics. In this collaboration, Baxter will leverage its leading clinical development and biologic manufacturing expertise, global leadership in sterile injectables and global commercial capabilities, while Momenta will provide its expertise in high-resolution analytics, characterization, and product and process development. Under the terms of the agreement, Baxter made an upfront cash payment of $33 million and may make additional milestone payments over the next several years for the development of the drugs, contingent upon the achievement of technical, development and regulatory milestones.
